The Integrated Writing requirement asks each undergraduate degree program to design its own Integrated Writing strategy by answering two key questions:
- What kinds of writing should our students learn to do?
- How will we help students develop the ability to write effectively in the genres and forms that matter in our field?
The Integrated Writing requirement strengthens the attention given to the specialized forms and situations of writing within academic fields. When we encourage students to use writing as a tool for exploring content in the major, provide guidance and feedback on their writing, and help them learn to use the styles and genres of our fields, we help them strengthen both their understanding of their fields of study and their communication skills. A number of programs have already begun implementing their plans for meeting the new requirement, and all programs should be meeting the requirement by Fall 2015.
